BUS STOP KNOBS
A new website has zipped open a hilarious debate about sexual graffiti.
www.busstopknobs.com celebrates the hastily drawn ‘cacti knobs’ that adorn bus stops, toilets and public places across the country. Throwing open the debate whether these images are just ‘childish schoolboy graffiti’ or ‘modern man alienated by technology marking his territory’, the site which has been live for less than a month has attracted interest from around the world, sparking debates in Australia, France, Argentina, Milan,
Mexico, the US and the UK.
The brainchild of the writer Ged Backland and designer Mark Lucas, this site will have one of the funniest galleries on the net, resulting in a must buy book, due for release later in the year.
Ged says,”I remember seeing my first bus stop knob in 1969 when I was six, it was at the bus stop on Southport Road in Bootle, Liverpool. I was with me Mam and she was taking me to town for a budgie jacket and a shirt with a penny round collar. It was hastily drawn and looked like a cactus, the balls such as they were, looked like Desperate Dan’s chin. My Mam caught me staring and gave me a clip around the ear, I’ve been smiling ever since.’
Mark says,” Last summer, whilst playing boules and drinking champagne in Wetherby, looking up at the tranquil blue sky, as the river trickled past, I noticed two large knobs drawn on the bench that we were sitting at, drawn by a two inch thick black marker pen. Hilarious!”
The site has been overloaded with pictures and the pair are negotiating a deal for the most talked about ‘coffee table’ book of the year.
