Ken Ishii
BORN: SAPPORO, JAPAN AGE: 34 MUSICAL STYLE: TECHNO, IN A BROADER WAY Ken Ishii is the name on everyone's lips - the man of the moment in the techno world! After his first release in 1993 - 'Garden of the Palm', which was Number 1 in the NME techno chart - he went on to produce the theme tune for the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano. He won the award for Best Techno DJ at 2004's DJ Awards in Ibiza and now he's back with his latest release - album 'Interpretations'. What is your biggest achievement? To keep enjoying life through music, maybe. What is your recipe for success? Move before you think. Do not worry too much about what people say. Who are your musical heroes? Steve Reich, Yellow Magic Orchestra. What is your favourite song? Brian Eno's 'Always Returning'. I think it is on his album 'Apollo'. I lost the CD a while ago but it's still playing over in my head. How did you feel when you were asked to produce the tune for the Winter Olympics? First I was really surprised when the Olympic people and NHK (Japanese National TV station) requested me to do it. It was a major honour to me. At that time I was still producing all my music at my apartment with a small set up of gear. I felt it was something like a dream that music from this personal space was being played at the Olympic stadiums and on TVs all over the world. You've done photo shoots for magazines and even have your own fashion line. Would you ever consider doing that full time, or is music always your first love? Photo sessions are just needed for my music being promoted. Doing a t-shirt line is for fun and free t-shirts. It's also a good way to follow a graphic design scene and to get to know other creative people. I like to do anything that could be used as inspiration for music. What are your plans for 2005? I'm currently working on music for a pavilion of World Expo, held in Aichi, Japan from March. The theme is 'beauty of Japan'. I work with a CG director Kazuma Morino who made my video, 'Iceblink', and did my tour visuals and VJing. I'm excited about doing it. Then I plan to do a mix album, followed by an artist album. Tell us about your new album... It is a remix album to be released in Europe. I released a DVD and CD package called 'Interpretations for Ken Ishii' in Japan in 2004, which is the original edition. The DVD includes videos for some tracks taken from my last original album, 'Future In Light'. The videos are done by various visual/drama/anime directors from Japan, UK and US. The CD includes several remixes of the album tracks done by Smith & Selway, Valentino Kanzyani, Jimpster, and Japanese cult producers like Moodman and Why Sheep? Exceptional Records took the CD part out of it for Europe and added two more remixes by Funk D'Void and Bryan Zentz. All of the remixers are of my choice. Are there any artists you would like to work with in the future? I want to do a couple of collaborations for next album since the last one I produced myself. I would like to work with Fabrice Lig, Bryan Zentz and Jeff Mills - they have a similar musical vibe to me. I would also like to work with some non-techno people who play percussion, guitar and sax. Describe yourself in five words: Tiny. Little. Easy going. Japanese. If not a DJ/producer, then what? Most realistically, an ordinary business man who does desktop music a little and DJs for friends. Or a journalist for Vale Tudo/MMA (a mixed martial arts organisation). I'm a serious fan of this. The scene is very big in Japan. What was the last CD you bought? A CD of gagaku, which is traditional court music of Japan. For study for the World Expo thing. Ken Ishii's album, 'Interpretations', is out now on Exceptional Records.

Carl Kennedy
STARRING: CARL KENNEDY BORN: BIRMINGHAM AGE: 28 MUSICAL STYLE: HOUSE - FROM SEXY TO PUMPING In October 2003, Pete Tong proclaimed Carl Kennedy one of the world's 'best undiscovered DJs'. Since then he has toured extensively, from the US to Eastern Europe, to Asia and Australia, and, of course, the dance capital itself, Ibiza. Carl's first production, 'The Love You Bring Me', is signed to Roger Sanchez's Stealth. Already an Essential New Tune on Radio 1, it is predicted to be one of the year's biggest tunes. What is your biggest achievement? Being nominated for Best Breakthrough DJ at the Dancestar Awards was pretty cool, and doing Radio 1 live from Ibiza was a dream come true. To play alongside DJs who inspired me like Roger Sanchez, David Morales and Erick Morillo. And, personally, having my son and raising him. Who are your musical heroes? I love pretty much all genres, from hip hop to Motown to rock. The Eighties - disco, you name it, depending on my mood. Stevie Wonder, U2, Ub40… too many to mention! Tell us about your new projects… Well, I just finished a remix for Cr2 records, which I'm really feeling, and I'm working on a remix for The Camel Riders. And I have two original tracks that need to be done before the end of the year. I'm trying to make quality rather than quantity. What are your plans for the rest of the year? A couple of gigs in the US, including Crobar with Pete Tong. The last couple of times we've played together were wicked! Then I'll finish up in the studio before I leave New York. Going to play in Amsterdam with Roger Sanchez and have Lisa Pure singing 'The Love You Bring Me' live. I'm off to Asia and Australia for New Year's Eve - I'm doing three or four gigs in 24 hours! Last year I almost killed myself trying to get from New York to England then Eastern Europe to Asia then Australia, all in four days. And then I get to hang out and work on some new stuff. I'll be releasing a lot next year so I need to plan. It's all about timing and a little luck. Are there any artists you'd like to work with? Anything you're impressed with at the moment? I'd love to work with Kylie Minogue! I think she would be fun. Also P Diddy - forget the hype, the guy is a real inspiration in all that he does. I'd also love to work with Basement Jaxx! Roger Sanchez's Release Yourself at Crobar New York was amazing last week. It's put a lot of faith back into the scene here in New York. After 9/11 the club scene got blazed. But now it's starting to warm up again. One Love in Melbourne has the best-looking crowd! The Fort parties in St Petersburg - no words can describe the gig there! It's a castle in the middle of the ocean which holds 15,000 people. It goes on for three days. And Pacha, Ibiza - the sexiest club on the planet. And I'm dying to play the Terrace at Space! Who would you invite to dinner and why? Queen Elizabeth I; she took the UK from ruin to being one of the most powerful countries in the world. I'm big on history. And Muhammad Ali, my favourite sportsman of all time. What is your recipe for success? Ask me in a few years! You have to work hard, believe in yourself and visualise what you want. I have the best friends and family. So I feel pretty successful there. What makes you happy? And what makes you angry? My girl and son make me happy. I love to see people happy first. When I was running the GBH parties I could never enjoy it until I thought everyone was having a good time. Same goes when I'm playing. Quality of life is more important than materialistic possessions. I hate greedy, selfish people with no manners - makes me want to kill them. Some people only ever look out for themselves! What was the last CD you bought? The John Butler Trio. I don't really buy any music any more. But this CD is cool! If not a DJ/producer, then what? No idea! I think I'd be promoting, but then that's more tiring than DJing, as you have to be out every night. It's a life I decided to let my partners carry on with. It was a stepping-stone for me. I'd love to have my own clothes label, and my own eatery. Carl Kennedy's 'The Love You Bring Me' is released on Stealth on November 22nd, with remixes from Roger Sanchez, Lee Cabrera, Hardsoul and Tom De Neef. www.carlkennedy.com www.stealth-records.com

Jamie Scott
STARRING: Jamie Scott BORN: LONDON AGE: 21 MUSICAL STYLE: SOUL Despite his tender years, Jamie Scott's extraordinary soulful voice and songwriting skills have seen him compared to Stevie Wonder, Jamiroquai, Justin Timberlake and Sting. Jamie is due to release his second single, 'Searching', in January, and his debut album, 'Soul Searching', in March. What is your biggest achievement? Getting enough support from my live performances for 'Just' to debut at Number 29 in the charts without major radio play. The single was inspired by the prophet Kahil Gibran and the poem 'Footprints', written by Mary Stevenson. Tell us about your new projects... I've been writing a lot for my album, which is out in March, so that has taken up a lot of time. I've been writing in Sweden and I might go to LA soon. My second single 'Searching' is out in January and Ill be cracking on with more live dates. Who are your musical heroes? Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Donnie Hatherway and Prince! And I also love the lyricists people like Bob Dylan and Paul Simon produce. Did you listen to pop music growing up? I first picked up a guitar at the age of seven and wrote my first song at nine, yet somehow I managed to miss out all the music from the '80s and '90s! I immersed myself in the music my parents listened to from the '60s and '70s. I think I'm lucky that I've never listened to a lot of radio pop, as it means I haven't been influenced by it. All I've listened to all my life is old school. And when you don't listen to modern-day music and you're reared on a diet of Marvin, Stevie and Donnie, you develop an ear for a tune. That's all I've ever been interested in. What are your plans for the coming months? The next few months are going to be really busy. I'll be mainly concentrating on my live gigs. I seem to be winning a lot of fans in this area! I'm about to go on tour with Beverly Knight, which I'm really looking forward to! Touring is definitely my thing! So far I've been on the road with Sugababes, Lemar, Ginuwine, Mario Winans, Carleen Anderson, and Rhian Benson. What do see yourself doing in the future? Hopefully, if things go according to plan, very soon I will be a household name and headlining my own national tour. That would be a dream come true! This really is my ultimate aim. Playing live is what it's all about and where I'm happiest! I could quite easily do without all the other stuff! Are there any other artists you'd like to work with? I fancy doing a duet with Joss Stone; I think our voices would work well together and, let's be honest, she's pretty is cool, isn't she! I would most like to headline the Jazz Café; it's something I'm yet to do and hope it won't be too long before I realise that ambition! I have performed there but only as a support, which isn't the same, really! Also there are a number of artists in the American neo-soul movement I'd love to work with, such as Raphael Sadique and D'Angelo. Actually, you've got me thinking now; the list is as long as my arm! Describe yourself in five words. Extrovert. Sarcastic. Driven. Non-conformist. Inquisitive. Who would you invite to dinner and why? Muhammad Ali, because he's been a hero of mine since I was a child. It would be amazing to chat with him for an evening and see what he thinks. He's an icon! What is your recipe for success? Umm, that's a tough one! I guess to never give up and always believe in yourself. That way whatever you achieve will be true. What makes you happy? Hearing fans singing your songs is the best feeling there is. And angry? I don't get angry easily, generally speaking; I'm quite good-natured. But the thing that does make me angry is how hard it is to get your music heard if it is not commercial. What was the last CD you bought? Marvin Gaye's 'Greatest Hits'. I had to have it as it came with a live DVD. Quality viewing! If not a singer/songwriter then what? I would turn the tables and be a critic instead!
