For the last 10 years MMM, Soundhack, Soundstream, Errorsmith and Smith N Hack (you still with me?) have been forging some of Berlin’s finest minimal edits. Emerging from the Basic Channel/ Hardwax camp, the team have been pioneering ‘forward-thinking’ techno and have gained recognition remixing the likes of Herbert & Villalobos. To celebrate their anniversary they've dropped a bombshell split 12 featuring MMM and Soundhack, featuring brand new productions as well as 'from the vaults' tracks, goodies they found on tapes from back in the days, when they just started these projects. The drifter returns, spitting the colourful multi-syllabic rhymes that have become his trademark. Dominated by monster percussion with a dash of disco and an infectious funky baseline, Dynamite Sound is a real head-nodder - with the vocals, which match the standard reached by 'High Plains Drifter' becoming more urgent as the track progresses. On the flipside is the slower paced 'Psychedelic Phlegm.' This Eastern influenced beat features the much loved warm crackling vinyl effect, laced with distant Asian female vocals, and topped with playful braggadocio battle raps and introspective wordplay. Back with the release of their second double A side, mixed by the talented Mark Freegard of Manic Street Preachers fame, who marries their epic sound and uplifting choruses superbly. There is a dark edge to frontman Seven's lyrics - 'Hold On' is a song with an overriding message of hope, whilst 'Hello' is a sarcastic 'Wake up!' expressing the futility of searching high and low for answers at every turn. Inspired (noticeably) by some of Manchester's great song writers and bands such as Joy Division, The Smiths, and more recently The Doves, this offering shows promise and whets the appetite for their upcoming debut album 'We must learn to walk again'. Rather worryingly, Notion's first attempt at accessing the myspace page of these fuzzbox lovin' rock-n-rollers threw up some 16 year old girl's personal page. So, Sarah from Staines, you can thank Some Velvet Morning’s PR for the spike in traffic. 'Losing My Mind' is the first single from this Cockerney three-piece, and opens with a bassline soaked in what I believe the Germans refer to as "schmutz". The gutsyness doesn't quite stay for the whole track, and if they're not careful, heathen legions of rock journos will be comparing them to Jet in about three months time; but this is a promising start, nonetheless. Yahoo! Music ran a study revealing the track people find most sexually arousing. The study, which involved a scientific analysis from leading music psychologist Dr Tomas Chamorro-Premuzic and over 2000 people, looked at music from the last 40 years to reveal which tracks put folk in the mood for lurve. Tomas concluded that in order for a song to stimulate, it must have 'a single lead voice and involve romantic or sensual lyrics with which the listener can identify with.' Yahoo! fashioned these findings into a Love Channel playlist they hope will have you creaming your pants. On the bill are Kylie, Madonna, Barry White and of course good old Mr Gaye.
