PLANETNOTION TELEVISION!
CAMERA-FOLK AND FILM EDITORS WANTED!
Planet Notion is looking for guys and dolls to film and edit features for its new TV channel, PNTV. Accompanying Notion to artist interviews, gigs, fashion shows, festivals and international events, you will be skilled, passionate and full of ideas about how to produce shit-hot video content. Camera-folk will be experienced and ideally have their own equipment, or at least access to equipment, while editors must be able to turn projects around quickly, and with stylistic flare. If you can both film and edit content, we would especially like to hear from you! These casual, unpaid positions would be ideal for those looking to develop their showreels, and to get the chance to travel, film major artists and top events.

Transient with Kollman and Sondorom, The Horse and Groom, 5th May

Transient are returning to Shoreditch boozer The Horse and Groom for another all out riot. Well, we are talking about the May bank-holiday after all. This one has the makings of the best Transient to date with two stellar names taking residence for an all out rave-up. Yep, that crazy Transient crew are going out with a SHA-BANG to rival the A-Bomb as they bid a - nay-temporary - farewell to The Horse and Groom. One half of Mobilee Records ‘Ralf Kollman’ is going to be taking to the decks for only his second performance in London this year. Kollman is best known for residencies on the ever-popular Berlin scene - playing the city’s Weekend nightclub where he can regularly be heard delving into a mixed bag of techno. Zee Germans love their techno and if there’s one German DJ that has “vays of making you dance” it’s Kollman. Joining Kollman will be Freack n’Chic’s Dyed Soundorom. Dyed’s a guy who’ll fit well in Shoreditch, what with all the artists and fashionistas and journalists and musicians that call it home. Over the last few years Dyed’s built up quite a rep with the similar cats of 'Gay Paris' where he can usually be found playing house and techno in the trendiest clubs and to the funkiest crowds. If you’ve ever imagined yourself wearing a silver cat suit, breathing like a goldfish and swimming in a disco ball, you’re halfway to picturing Dyed’s sound. It’s predominantly slow and minimal with a subtle groove. God, that sounds like a wine expert talking. Does that sound freaky? Does that float your boat? Do you want to don your phosfluorescent shell-suit and “ave’ it large?” Thought so… Which is why you should pop on down to The Horse and Groom for Transient’s last party until Summer. JAM FOR BREAD - OVER 7 ACTS IN ONE PLACE! Shepherds Bush Empire, May 1st

This one’s for a good cause. Some of the finest underground acts will join together to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the signing of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. They’ll be raising money as well, for The Medical Foundation for the Care of Victims of Torture. The event’s going to be called ‘Jam for Bread’ and the line-ups a good one to boot. Radio presenter, DJ and record label owner Gilles Peterson, whose first label had Jamiroquai on their roster, will introduce the line-up. It’s going to include a live performance from Bonobo, not to be mistaken with the pygmy Chimpanzee that goes by the same name. This Bonobo is the guy who had a track on a Citroen ad; down-tempo magic of the highest-caliber, drawing inspiration from various ethnic roots on distinctive basslines, with melodious results. Lou Rhodes will also be at the Shepherd’s Bush Empire on the night. Lou used to be in Lamb, who were relatively famous during the 90s trip-hop and drum ‘n’ bass explosion. Since launching a solo career Lou has been nominated for the Mercury Music Prize and has dramatically altered her image by drawing on the folk scene. The result’s a husky, sultry voice that brings you a little closer to the real Lou. Well, that’s our interpretation… You’ve probably realised by now that ‘Jam for Bread’ is a pretty eclectic night. I guess being called ‘Jam for Bread’ you’d expect that because both bread and jam come in so many guises. You’ve got your strawberry, blackberry, blueberry; your white, wholegrain and your Beardyman. One of the most iconic beatboxers in the world, the beauty of Beardyman lies not in his immense skill, layering rhythms with bleeps and basslines, but an ability not to take it all too seriously. Ancient Japanese proverb say: “He who smiles rather than rages is always the stronger”. Then we’ve got a Soothsayers afro-beat and dub onslaught, which is usually a fantastic live experience, and Nathan ‘Flutebox’ Lee. Lee’s a most unusual fellow, drawing on and blending such styles as hip hop, drum ‘n’ bass and jazz. His distinct sound has led to collaborations with the likes of the Prodigy. He’s obviously a bit special. I’ve just realised how many acts are actually performing at this thing. It’s immense! The legendary 4hero will be playing a DJ set with one of those special visual shows accompanying him. Not just any visual show, but a visual show from Inside-Us-All crew members Marc Mac and MC MG. Why do these people have such odd names? Tawiah is a young lady who has toured with one of the finest producers of today. At least in the eyes of what we like to call ‘the music law’. Those whose say-so is final in the eyes of judging panels, newspaper hacks, the younger generation and the like. I guess it’s not hard to see the similarities with Ronson; they both blend different styles, Tawiah opting for ‘twisted soul’ with jazz, electro and rock elements. Finally we have Jamie Woon. I’m feeling somewhat lethargic so I’ll keep this short and sweet. Woon has toured with Amy Winehouse and is tipped to be one of the UK’s most soulful musicians. That says all that needs to be said. Remember, the night’s for a good cause. It’s going to raise money for a charity devoted to treating torture survivors. This means aiding them through both the mental and physical strains of their predicament. THE RAGE INTO SPRING featuring THE CRIMEA and THE CLIK CLIK, April 16th, Cargo

Flag bearers of music for the older gentleman and gentle-lady, All The Rage is back with a whole host of top events showcasing the best in ‘non-teeny-bopping-Indie’ music. Rather than showcasing the commercial spiel that every “oh so cool” 13 – 18 year-old is listening to, All The Rage’s core lies in the depth and “rough-around-the-edge” virtuosity of its music. Anyway, the majority of gig-goers are aged between 45 and 54 according to the stats... So there! With ‘All The Rage’ we’re talking bands and artistes that the audience can appreciate for far more than having a pretty face or a double-barreled name. In a nut-shell All The Rage showcases bands before they hit the mainstream – kicking off with ‘Rage Into Spring’ at Cargo on April 16th, featuring Hadouken!’s best mates and tour buddies, The Clik Clik, and Camden post-punk outfit The Crimea. Oh, yes! The Clik Clik will be joined by up-and-coming acts ‘Tom Hatred and The Angry Band’ and James Yuil for the Cargo event, which is set to include some bloody great surprises. Trust us; believe us; take our word when we say; Father Christmas just came early! Dirty old sod… All The Rage offers a far more mature environment for the audience; with an all-inclusive ticket you’re treated to a complimentary (free) bar and five star food. Oh, and there’ll be Krispy Kreme doughnuts on offer too! Mmm… doughnuts! Of course, The Crimea are the most exciting addition to the line-up. First single ‘Lottery Winners on Acid’, taken from their debut album Tragedy Rocks, was Colin and Edith’s ‘Single of the Week’ back in 2006; whilst new single ‘Loop a Loop’ was used on the Trident Gum advert and has been remixed to the point of near exhaustion. Not in a tiresome way, but in the sense that it’s that bloody brilliant! The way that All The Rage operates is to offer older music lovers a membership. It’s sort of like a season ticket in football, only far cheaper and with the added bonus of free booze and food and other wee treats that are all too rare in the ‘oh so’ commercial music industry… Because it’s an exclusive over 18 event, we can be trusted not to drink too excessively, right? Anyway, the whole membership shebang is a means of creating a ‘Rage’ community, with a website offering a members only section containing exclusive downloads and the like. It’s all very exciting. The other All The Rage events will be taking place on a seasonal basis. July 2nd will mark ‘The Rage On In Summer’ event, October 8th will mark ‘The Rage Through Autumn’, and December 11th will mark ‘The Rage Out In Winter’. Oh, and they’ll also be holding ‘The Rage At The Race’ during the weekend of 24th – 25th May which, in case you’re not clued up on ye ‘ol Formula One, is the weekend of the Monaco Grand Prix! Yep, we’re talking a series of top events! Live! In Monaco! Tickets for ‘All The Rage’ started selling before the line-up was even revealed following it’s success last year, which hosted the likes of Dirty Pretty Things, The Rumble Strips and the Young Knives. THE SMIRNOFF ELECTRIC CABARET at ABC GLASGOW, April 17th

Here’s one for our friends north utt’border. The Smirnoff Electric Cabaret will be showcasing another fusion of music and the arts on Tuesday 18th April, this time at Glasgow’s ABC club; and we’re not talking a Monet or Rembrandt, oh no, we’re talking speed-painting, contortionism, beatboxing and more besides, to create the ultimate carnival inside a club. The Smirnoff Electric Cabaret never fails to put on a good show, forever rewarding revelers with an eclectic array of acts; the ABC’s set to be no different with Smirnoff firing from all cylinders. First-up we’ve got Mercury Prize nominated quintet New Young Pony Club, delivering electro/pop wonders with reckless abandon. If one’s searching for a band blessed with the rare ability to attract electrolytes and skinny-jean clad Indie kids to the dancefloor, New Young Pony Club are as near as you’re gonna get with their melodious vocals and sugar-synth pop. Alas, there’ll be a special treat at the ABC as Maximo Park take over the decks in a ‘rock vs. dance’ battle – “WAY EY, MAN!” Glasgow-based dance luminary Linus Love, who produced the Isle of Skye ’s most famous son, Mylo, will be defending dance as he takes on his Geordie neighbours. If infectious post-punk/pop/rock beats are more your cup of tea (or Bovril) then look no further than Eel Pie Island exports The Mystery Jets. It’s somewhat unsurprising that the band were influenced (amongst others) by Syd Barrett… The Mystery Jets are a little less Wicker Man, implementing only the occasional use of trippy-rock amid a myriad of their own distinct sounds. Finally, up-and-coming Reading group Pete and The Pirates will be dipping into their bag of Indie/rock and sprinkling a mix of fast-paced guitar, foot-jangling beats and busty ballads following the release of their highly acclaimed debut album Little Death. They’re pipped to be bloody huge in 2008, but we’ll let our Glaswegian brothers be the judge of that! Of course, no Smirnoff Electric Cabaret event would be complete without a token beatbox extraordinaire and this time round it’s the appropriately named Petebox. He’ll be joined by Burlesque duo the Wau Wau Sisters (“OH, MATRON”) contortionist Captain Frodo (not to be confused with the wee fella from Lord of the Rings), speed-painter John Hicks, and urban magicians. BURNSKI at TRANSIENT at THE HORSE & GROOM in SHOREDITCH, April 19th

Transient returns for another night of fun, games and general debauchery at the Horse and Groom on Saturday 19th April. As per usual resident DJs Ad Jones and Dan Kinasz will welcome a special guest DJ. Oh yes! And this time round it’s a young whipper-snapper by the name of Burnski. Burnski was hitting the ‘ol club scene at the tender age of sixteen; frequenting Middlesbrough’s Empire club every Friday, taking in a whole new scene and (possibly) getting a wee bit pissed. However, the main benefit was the music, which obviously had a massive effect on the lad. As you’ve probably guessed, there was a natural progression from listening to music and then producing music. This was followed by a stint at the Leeds institution Back to Basics aged just twenty. In a nutshell, Burnski was killing it at Back to Basics and became the youngest guest DJ to play the main room. Ever! PERIOD! Basically, Burnski has everything in his repertoire. He’s one of those blokes that have so many influences they can chop and tweak their sound depending on the night in question. Be it trip hop, jazz, disco, electro, dubstep, house, minimal or techno, our Burnski ain’t too fussy. Furthermore, as well as being a dab hand behind the decks Burnski is a dab hand at producing. Want proof? We’ve got it! With fourteen tracks under his belt since the release of debut ‘Coldcut’ in 2005, further releases on Morris Audio have catapulted him to the dizzy heights of Efdemin, John Dahlback and other quality DJs. To cut a long story short the lad’s in high demand, having played all over Europe, with gigs including Watergate, Sankeys and the TDK Festival. Anyway, enough of the then and more of the now. With latest single ‘Monkey Hanging’ receiving “much respec’ yeah” from all circles, this is going to be one of Burnski’s first London dates of the year. And it’s at Transient. At the Horse and Groom. In Shoreditch. On April 19th. And you should probably go, because the ‘and’, and the ‘at’, and the ‘in’, and the ‘on’ says “SPREAD YOUR WINGS, STICK ON YOUR BEST KECKS AND DANCE MY PRETTIES, DANCE! 'Out Of The Frying Pan' featuring Hijak Oscar, Embassy Club, April 1st

Out Of The Frying Pan and into the fire, or alternatively, smack-bang into one of the swankiest joints around. Rock ‘n’ roll and the prim and proper surroundings of Mayfair (the priciest area in Monopoly) aren’t exactly cheese and wine, or so you’d think, m'lord. For this bizarre pairing are indeed linking arms, as Out Of The Frying Pan brings a night of dirty blues, rock ‘n’ roll, and good ‘ol fashioned poetry to the famous Embassy club. In aid of the Parkinson’s Disease Society all manner of acts will be descending upon the Embassy and, despite garnering a rep for pricey beverages, drinks are set to be half-price before eleven PM. Let’s face it, you’ll probably be a tad pissed by then, so when drinks prices do go up, you probably won’t give it a second thought anyway. The All New Adventures Of Us (TANAOU) are a seven-piece band, you know, in the mould of Arcade Fire and the like. Anyway, TANAOU have gained notoriety for their live performances and, yet again, we’re going use Arcade Fire as a comparison. Yep, it’s a tad lazy to keep contrasting the two bands but time is of the essence, and my fingers are tapping the keyboard quicker than a hyperactive greyhound on a speed trip. Anyway, TANAOU have got that whole poetic, sweet sounding vibe going on… A bit like Athlete, only less drippy and a lot faster paced. And they’re not afraid to say “shit” in their lyrics either, which proves that they've got more balls! You’re probably familiar with vudu-blues band Hijak Oscar, they’re that group from Channel 4’s ‘Mobile Act Unsigned’ that got really really far and fell at the last hurdle. The judges went all X-Factor on their arses because they looked a bit different, you know, and lacked that sort of poster boy/girl feel. Anyway, their grass-roots blues style sound, which incorporates the sublime harmonica, is a bit different from a lot of the music doing the rounds at the moment… It’s quite refreshing really, kind of like jacking off in the bath. We reckon the Channel 4 result was fixed! Finally, the Wallbirds, who kind of blend loads of different influences together to come up with their own sort of distinct sound, will be playing at Embassy. They’ve supported Pigeon Detectives, Lightspeed Champion and Reverend and the Makers in the past. Anyway, The Wallbirds incorporate the harmonica as well, which is where the whole dirty blues vibe of the night stems from. Wallbirds have that Bob Dylanesque raspy vocal shindig going on, and they have this sort of classic rock feel. Sort of bringing 50s and early 60s forward to a whole new generation, which is always welcome. So they’ll have this sort of foot-tapping, “tappety-tap” rhythm one minute, and then suddenly go all fast-paced. You don’t know what your gonna get. It's most exciting! Oh, and DJ Shuffle will be on the decks as well… Out Of The Frying Pan: Putting grease in your champers and eggs on your caviar. The Parlour: Featuring Ulterior, The Macbeth, 15th March

Ah, Macbeth. He had his best mate killed, went mental, and was eventually beheaded. A tragic tale of a tragic man; a bit like Dean Gaffney. If you’d rather not have a tragic night, look no further than The Parlour, taking place at The Macbeth in Hoxton. Forget witches and schizophrenia, The Macbeth’s full of Hoxton hotties, with their heads screwed-on to eclectic tunes and belly-laughs. Oh yeah, you better believe it when we say, The Parlour is set to showcase a diverse array of electro/indie for the masses. Electro/indie, in case you’re wondering, is as hot as Eva Longoria’s bikini line, so The Parlour’s where it’s at. You want deep and daring? Welcome to the world of Ulterior, with tunes so heavy they were blamed for nationwide tremors experienced last week. Think Primal Scream’s Swastika Eyes and you’re some way to understanding Ulterior’s vocal/bassline blend. Next up is Cleckhuddersfax – an acquired taste maybe, and definitely not the kind of music to listen to when you’re seriously tripping, Cleckhuddersfax delve into the realms of prog-electro with bass-squelches, guitar-licks, and a soundscape akin to a ZX Spectrum. Unfortunately, vocally reminiscent of that fella from The Darkness but amazing nonetheless. Finally, beat-poet Gypsy Girl has teamed up with the notorious XX Teens drummer to whisk sub-bass rhythms with vocal chatter akin to Kate Nash and Mike Skinner’s rather talented lovechild (now there’s a thought). Gypsy Girl Filth’s stammering narrative and electro hybrid is some fresh shit. So fresh it’s steaming hot and the flies have yet to set-up shop. "All the perfumes of Arabia will not sweeten this little hand." Macbeth; I couldn’t have put it better myself. Twisted Licks with Joe Lean and the Jing Jang Jong, 229, March 7th

If you cross a guitar lick with an electro bleep you end up with something akin to Twisted Licks. Yep, combining the best of both worlds, Twisted Licks is hitting new venue 229, bringing an eclectic mix of Indie and Electro. 229 shares the Twisted mentality of blending a live gig experience with a live club experience. I guess you could say they’re spreading peace and love, man - the whole “why don’t we all just get along” - John and Yoko mentality; which Planet Notion supports wholeheartedly. Anyway, unless you’ve had your head buried in the sand for the last year or so, you’d have heard of Joe Lean and the Jing Jang Jong. You haven’t? Then go lay an egg! Joe Lean and his merry men will be playing live and in your face; blending pleasant, catchy, and somewhat danceable pop with a little bit of Indie rock. The boys will be joined by The Alones, a fast-paced guitar laden three-piece from Stoke on Trent, whose new single ‘Silver’ is the first to be released on Another Music Another Kitchen’s new label. South-East London hipsters Christopher D Ashley will be injecting an electro buzz into proceedings with their distinct 80s sounding mixes. Think crimped hair, Pac Man and Flight of the Navigator and you’re some way there. Far from mocking the boys, this is a good thing, and apparently the 80s are undergoing a resurgence so ‘Hoorah’ for Christopher D Ashley! We salute you… Making up the party will be Twisted resident Slim Jim and Guy from Fierce Panda, for some good old fashioned DJ fun. Should you go to Twisted Licks? Madame Mim 'Global Beats Special', Guanabara, 13th March

Man, I love Brazil more than I love fish and chips. And I love Fish and Chips. But, obviously, I love Brazil more. It’s all that sexy Latino samba, the hot sun and sandy beaches, not to mention all those scantily-clad women at the Rio Carnival. And as for their music; man, it’s out of this world. Hence why the country’s scene is fast a-growing. Now London’s premiere Brazilian nightspot, Guanabara, is welcoming one of Sao Paulo’s hottest talents, Madame Mim. Rather than bringing plain old Latino beats to proceedings, Madame Mim spices things up with an eclectic mix of punk, electro and rock, all on a sexy Brazilian backbeat. She’s mighty good at somersaults, cartwheels and thrusts as well… Scandalous! Whilst playing guitar and singing, Madame Mim will be backed by guest-star Marcelo Vig on keyboards, groovebox, and ‘surprise’ instruments. Quite what these surprises might be remains to be seen, though everyone loves a surprise, so we won’t ponder too much on that minute detail. All you need to know is that Mim will be showcasing tunes from her new album ‘Electric Kool-Aid’, which in our eyes, is the best surprise one could wish for… Naturally the combined efforts of Mim and Vig create a whirlwind of orgasmic sounds, beats, and dance-floor-fillers which, in a 600 capacity venue, suits us to the ruddy ground.
